Foundation Programs

• The SUHI Foundation Primary Fund – The primary fund of the SUHI Foundation awards an annual 4-year scholarship in the amount of $1,000 per year. This fund also contributes directly to education programs that benefit Sweetwater High School faculty and students.
• Class of ’63 Scholarship– Scholarships are awarded to SUHI students in college. Students must apply to the Class of 1963 committee, must have been accepted to a 4 year college and have participated in volunteerism or community service.
• Class of ’64 Scholarship – What began as a 1-year scholarship has evolved into a 4-year scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to $3,000 awarded each year. Students must apply to the Class of ‘64 committee, must be accepted to a 4 year college and demonstrate a financial need.
• Class of ’76 Scholarships – A $2,000 scholarship awarded to a student attending a university, and a $500 to $1,000 scholarship to a student attending either 1) a 2-year Community College in pursuit of an Associate Degree or Transfer to a 4-year University, OR 2) an accredited technical school pursuing a Trade or Technical Certification. Amount and timeline of payments will be decided by the Committee based on selected applicant’s completion plan and financial need. Students must reside in National City, have a minimum 2.5 GPA and have attended National City schools since 8th grade. Applicants must present a thoughtful and clear plan for completion.
• Class of ’93 Scholarship– Created by the Class of 1993 25-year Reunion Committee, this 1-year scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded each year to a graduating senior. Students must plan to attend a 4 year-university and demonstrate financial need.
• “Mr./Miss Sweetwater” Ken Aramburo Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship was established in memory of fellow classmate Ken Aramburo (Class of 1994). This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a college-bound student who exhibits a high level of school spirit and exemplifies the “Mr./Miss Sweetwater” commitment and dedication through school leadership and extra-curricular involvement.
• Pat Peace Browning Scholarship – In memory of “Mrs. Peace”, an English teacher at Sweetwater High School from the mid-1950’s through the late 1960’s, to honor her legacy of empowering students to succeed. Initially in the amount of $2,000, this scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who demonstrates a commitment to community service and helping others.
• Ruth Anna and Louis F. Cable Memorial Scholarship – Former Drama teacher Ms. Dorothy Cable, who retired after 33 years of service at Sweetwater High School, established this scholarship in memory of her loving parents. This is a 4-year scholarship, in the amount of $2,500 per year.
• Laura R. Charles Memorial Scholarship – The Laura R. Charles Memorial Scholarship was established in remembrance of Ms. Charles who taught at Sweetwater High School for over 47 years. In honor of her love and dedication to SUHI, a scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who has completed at least 2 semesters of VAPA performance courses. The goal is to award a $1,000 scholarship annually.
• “Make It Happen” Robert R. Cruzan Memorial Scholarship – This 4-year scholarship, in the amount of $3,000 per year, was established by the Cruzan Family to honor their father, a SUHI Class of 1940 alumnus. To qualify for this award, students must exemplify strong work ethic at school, participate in extra-curricular activities and/or part time employment, showing the necessary grit to be successful.
• Alan Dodson Memorial Scholarship– This scholarship was established in memory of fellow classmate Alan Dodson. A 4-year scholarship is awarded in the amount of $3,000 per year. Student applicants must have lettered in a sport, must be accepted to a 4-year college and demonstrate a financial need to complete an application. An annual golf tournament is held in June and proceeds are building toward a scholarship endowment.
• Thomas M. Martinez Memorial Scholarship – The Thomas M. Martinez Memorial Scholarship for graduating seniors or graduates of Sweetwater High School is a 1-year scholarship in the amount of $1,000 per student. Applicants must apply and be accepted to a 4 year college or university. Preference is given to applicants who are JROTC cadets during at least two years at Sweetwater and children of Veterans, but others also will be considered.
• Kile Morgan, Sr. and Donna Wilcox Morgan Memorial Scholarship– Two separate scholarships were established in memory of Kile Morgan, Sr. and Donna Wilcox Morgan by their family. Each scholarship is for $3,000 per year per recipient. Student applicants must demonstrate a financial need, be accepted to a 4-year college and have an interest in community service.
• Macias Family Scholarship – A scholarship in the amount of $500 to $1,000 will be awarded to a student attending 1) a 2-year Community College in pursuit of an Associate Degree or Transfer to a 4-year University, OR 2) an accredited technical school pursuing a Trade or Technical Certification. Amount and timeline of payments will be decided by the Committee based on selected applicant’s completion plan and financial need. Applicants must present a thoughtful and clear plan for completion.
• Linda F. Morasch Scholarship – The Linda F. Morasch Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors of Sweetwater High School is a 4-year scholarship in the amount of $3,000 per year. Applicants must apply and be accepted to a California State University in one of the following majors: business or economics.
• Luis “Louie” and Patricia Natividad Scholarship -The goal is to award at least one $500 scholarship annually to a community college-bound student in honor of Louie Natividad, a SUHI Class of 1961 alumnus and his wife Pat. Consistent with the family’s legacy and commitment to social justice, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who exemplifies this through her/his current community involvement and future career interests and who clearly demonstrates unmet financial need.
• Jess and Sharon Van Deventer Business Scholarship -This is a 4-year scholarship in the amount of $1,000 per year. Applicants must apply and be accepted to San Diego State University, majoring in Business.

Programs:

• SUHI Matching Grants Program – The Matching Grants effort has supported the Athletics Department as well as the Red Devil Corps/Band in 2016 and 2017, respectively, with a $5,000 grant, which was achieved with the collective support of donations earmarked for that match.
• SUHI Mini-Grant Program – As of the end of 2017, the Foundation has rolled out the Mini-Grant Application to support student success in areas that align with its mission by funding grants in the amount of $100 to $1000 for staff- and student-led programs/projects/events. Initially, $4000 is available for this program, and with the support of more donors it has the potential to make a big impact in addressing “SUHI’s Greatest Needs”. The application is available here.
• Project Letterman – This program was created in 2014 by a couple of dedicated SUHI teachers who saw an opportunity to motivate students to excel both on and off the field, in the classroom and in their extra-curriculars. As of the end of the 2017-18 school year, Project Letterman had awarded jackets to 78 deserving students and has set a goal to raise funds to recognize at least 20 each year.
